The Importance Of Learning How Mental Illness Affects Families

By William Richardson

While the focus of various mental disorders is on the individual themselves, one doesn't always pay attention to the families. Learning how mental illness affects families is important because it will save one a lot of tears. Even though you love your spouse, it can actually drive you away because you simply don't understand what he or she is going through.

Guidance from people who are in the profession and who are experienced can be a lifesaver. Individuals obviously suffer in different ways. This can be emotions that they display. It can also be practical ways which can involve the members of the family. This, one needs to take into consideration.

There are parents or spouses as well as siblings who just don't understand what depression or anxiety is. They may feel that the individual is being lazy or they are acting like a drama queen. Some people like this don't have the compassion for the person. On the other hand, there are family members who don't manage their loved ones in terms of what they say.

A person will obviously love the and care about their spouse, son or daughter, but it can be frustrating when they are lied to or when they are sometimes physically abused, as is the case with various illnesses. This can happen with borderline personality disorder which has not been controlled. The individual will have mood swings.

The most important thing a person like this needs is support. In addition to this, it can be so helpful when the support comes from the person who means the most to them. Not having this type of support will create extra stress and anxiety for the individual which will lead to further feelings of doubt and negative self talk.

A group is a good way in which you are able to get your feet wet. It especially relates to someone who has not been to therapy and feels that they are more skeptical about this. By talking to other people about the illness that their loved one is going through, they will find a sense of identity. They will be more positive about taking the next step.

They may feel that their brother or sister is getting a lot of attention. They won't actually grasp the idea of the illness. All they are aware of is that they are being left out of a lot of the family plans. This is something that one needs to take into consideration. Siblings also need to know how to interact with the individual. Many emotions will be flying through their mind at this point in time.

There are practical areas which one has to be aware of in some cases and it can be frustrating. For example, the individual may not be eating. They may be sleeping all day. Often, they will be moody. Obviously it depends on the illness, but a lot of individuals will react in a negative way. It can affect one because they will begin to feel guilty and they need to deal with this.
