What You Should Know About Cynophobia

By Robin Setser

If you're a pet owner, it would be far-fetched to think about being afraid of dogs. Believe it or not, though, there are many people that fear even the friendliest of canines. This particular fear is known as cynophobia, which is actually more common than you may think. If you'd like to know more about the phobia in question, from how it develops to the ways that it can be cured, please read on.

When it comes to the symptoms of cynophobia, fear is the most prevalent. According to companies like Assisi Animal Health, someone who suffers from this phobia will do whatever they can to avoid dogs that they see. Even if they have to take the long way to walk home, even if the short way has a dog in the path, they will do it. Excessive, irrational avoidance is commonly associated with those that suffer from this condition.

The causes of cynophobia are numerous as well, though some are more common than others. One such cause is seeing a dog bite or even attack someone. This phobia can also develop due to personal experience, like being unexpectedly jumped on by a dog that simply wanted to play. These are real-life situations that can occur, and the idea that they can result in cynophobia shouldn't be disregarded.

Cynophobia is troublesome, to say the least, but it's not like it can't be cured. As a matter of fact, it's been proven that it can be remedied with therapy, which focuses on the negativity that some people associate with dogs. By doing so, they will be able to take said negativity and rework it, in a sense, so that it becomes more positive. In simplest terms, this will help people become less tense when they're around dogs.

There's a difference between not being a "dog person" and actively avoiding these animals by all means. Cynophobia is nothing short of hindering, especially when you consider that dogs are among the most popular pets in the world. If you feel like you're suffering from this condition, you should know that there are ways to help yourself. While you may not magically become a canine enthusiast, at least you won't tense up at the sight of one of these animals.
