After 23 years of fighting to end cosmetic animal experiments, the European Coalition to End Animal Experiments has finally received its wish. All member countries of the European Union must respect the rules prohibiting all cosmetic tests on animals. The rules came into effect on March 11th. All cosmetic brands, including high-end brands, must comply with this new rule that aims to protect animals.
As mentioned earlier, the long-term debate over whether animal testing should be banned or not for years. According to the members of the ECEAU, the current European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy is the main reason for this radical change. They also criticize the former Commissioner for continuing practices that could have weakened the ban on animal testing and allowed him to continue. According to him, the Commissioner allowed them to practice the safety of cosmetics and cosmetic ingredients until companies find another way to do so. Current Commissioner Tonio Borg was more sympathetic to the plight of animals.
New methods for testing cosmetics may be more complicated, but they say they avoid more than 12 million animals a year since tests are done to see if the cosmetics are safe. Cases of brutal animal experimentation appeared in the 1990s, when people began to hear about the terrible experiences to which animals were subjected in the name of beauty.
Some experiments included rubbing chemicals in the eyes of rabbits or the shaved skin of rabbits to see if there was irritation in the body. Pain relief is not provided to the animals while administering such a painful experience. Another painful screening method discovered is one in which animals are force-fed to eat chemicals or even cosmetics so that the scientist can see if they are developing a disease such as cancer. They will also breed animals for congenital malformations in the future. If these are not bad enough for you, the most widely accepted test of animals is considered the lethal dose method. During the legal dose method, animals are fed with as much product as possible until they die to measure what would be the lethal dose for that cosmetic product.
People who have fought for a long time see this ban as a great victory in animal rights. Because of the horrible nature of the experiences, it's easy to see why.
