By Scott Cole

Fibromyalgia refers to a common musculoskeletal pain and fatigue disorder. This condition is often considered to be a syndrome due to the fact that there are several conditions and symptoms that are often associated with it. The term fibromyalgia means pain in the tendons, ligaments, and muscles. These are the soft fibrous tissues contained in the body. Most patients that have this condition say that their bodies ache everywhere. When in search of Fibromyalgia education Winnipeg should be given priority.

Pain allover is similar to that feeling that comes when one has a bad flu that is chronic. One feels like their muscles are being pulled or are overworked. Sometimes the muscles may twitch or burn. More women are more prone to this condition than men. As such, a percentage of only 25 men have it in comparison to 75 of women.

The age of a person does not play any part in the contraction of this condition since it can affect any one. There is no single cause for this disorder. Nevertheless, several events have been considered to trigger it. Physical trauma, viral or bacterial infections and other medical disorder like lupus, hypothyroidism and rheumatoid are examples of such trigger events.

Routine laboratory testing is not able to reveal anything that is related to the condition. However, patients usually exhibit sensitivity in certain areas of their bodies. These points are referred to as tender points. There is a diagnostic criterion that has been put forth for research purposes. In the criteria, a patient needs to have had pain for a minimum of three months in all the four quadrants of the body.

It is a must that pain is felt in at least 11 out of the 18 tender points that the body has. Normally the tender points are found around the knees, chest, shoulder hip, elbow and elbow areas. Above 90 percent of this points are myofascial trigger spots. Even though some people may not all the specified elements in the diagnostic criteria, they may still experience symptoms along with pain on about 6 tender points.

Diagnosis and treatment for fibromyalgia should be done on such people even if they do not meet the diagnostic criterion. Among the most common symptoms shown by patients are memory problems, irritable bowel syndrome, fatigue and disturbed sleep. An approximate percentage of 75 of people with chronic fatigue syndrome normally meet the fibrositis diagnostic criteria. Some other conditions exist and are similar to this one in terms of symptoms and other aspects.

Improvement of sleep and reduction of pain are involved in most traditional treatments for fibrositis. In order to personalize the treatment, sleep study has to be done. Sleep is a very vital aspect in the normal body functioning. Body functions such as tissue repair, hormones, antibody reduction, neurotransmitter and immune system chemicals are affected by sleep.

Given the importance of sleep, it is important to have it treated fully because its persistence may have adverse effects on fibrositis. Some of the medications that can be used to treat sleep disorder include Ambien, trazodone, Lunesta, and clonazepam. Besides medication, patients may also need to use other kinds of treatment, which include trigger point injections with lidocaine, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. Other treatment options include acupuncture, osteopathic manipulation, acupressure, relaxation/biofeedback techniques, chiropractic care, a gentle exercise program, and therapeutic massage.
